Not on board
Regarding the article Wheels on bus run on batteries, with $44M electric fleet plan (June 22).
Why use the term government “grant” when government “gift” is more easily understood by the reader?
What happens if the manufacturer of electric school buses declares bankruptcy which was the case with municipal buses in Edmonton?
Why not lease electric buses to determine if they will be worth investing infor the long term?

Will the retired diesel buses be sold to entities that will put them right back on Canadian roads thus defeating the purpose of reducing emissions?
Since Canadians are gifting a third of the cost in this fleet purchase, should we not get the whole story rather than a few titbits?

Pick up garbage
I love going for a walk in Kiwanis Park. Lately, I have noticed garbage laying on the ground sometimes less than a metre from the garbage can.
The people who get on my nerves are the people who change a diaper and throw the soiled diaper on the ground in the parking lot area. Take the baby with you when you throw their diaper in the garbage.

Discourteous parking
Arriving at a local store, there were no handicap parking spots, so I parked in courtesy parking for pregnant women or those with young children.
As I got out of my vehicle, a mother, seeing that I was not pregnant and had no small children, yelled at me.
This is not the first time I have been accosted in this manner by entitled women who feel they should have special treatment. I told her I have a disability and deserve preferential treatment to park my vehicle, and if a pregnant woman, or woman with young children cannot walk across a parking lot, perhaps they should not be shopping. I do hope she got the message, as other customers who heard my comments applauded.

Women of my generation or even our daughters’ generation never had courtesy parking. Pregnancy and motherhood is a condition, not a disability.
My suggestion is businesses dispense with these ludicrous courtesy parking spots or rename them for senior parking, or handicap parking only.

Nails in the coffin
The Liberal government’s recent increase in the capital gains tax is just more proof they have a spending problem. With record debt and budget deficits the best idea they can come up with is to tax the people who create businesses and capital investments in Canada.
What about, for a change, you stop spending money you don’t have, like everyday Canadians have to do. Every time the prime minister announces what the government likes to call “an investment” it costs us all.
I completely agree with the conservatives not voting for the capital gains tax increase. This investment-killing tax is the last thing we need.

Choose carefully
Before everyone jumps on the apparently popular view that the federal Liberals are done, stop and think.
We need to remember the basic principles and ideologies of our various Canadian political parties. Don’t be too quick to give up on the ideals of the Liberals. I don’t agree with every single decision of any party, but I would definitely prefer to have a leader like Justin Trudeau representing Canada on the world stage.
Maybe it’s time to realize that most of our problems today are a result of the pandemic and not the political party in power.
The Liberals were quick to act for Canadians without hesitation.

Where’s building?
The City of Stratford held a public meeting on June 27 to review a proposal for a 10-storey, 400-unit development on the site of the former Krug factory on Douro Street.
The sign announcing the meeting contains a drawing that is missing the 10-storey building. It shows only four storeys.
Perhaps the building is made of glass, but I doubt it. What reason could there be to hide the most important request from the developer, to build the first 10-storey apartment building in Stratford?

I do not object to development, and I do not object to repurposing industrial land for housing, but I do object to duplicity.

Wind storm clean-up
The recent wind storm knocked a branch from a city tree onto a power line to our house. This branch hung over the sidewalk used by many children on their way to and from school.
I notified the city and its staff removed the branch on the same day.
They also removed several large limbs that had fallen on our lawn.
Thank you for a job well done.

Points for discussion
As an educator, I need to be a part of a change in the discrepancies between the London District Catholic and Thames Valley District school boards.
Thames Valley had six administrative leaders leave for positions with the Catholic board. Six.
This has happened consistently for the last three years. This needs to be a point of discussion for our community.
Why is Thames Valley out-numbered two to one for educational assistants?
Why do we still have schools that do not have air A$conditioning?
When was the last Thames Valley built a high school?

Step in right direction
The Toronto-St Paul’s byelection result is just the start to removing this government. It can’t happen soon enough! I would love to see the Liberals lose all seats in Parliament. I would laugh so hard.

Focus on sports news
Regarding the article, With Paige VanZant thriving on OnlyFans, fighting now ‘just a hobby’ (June 24)
The promotion of some MMA fighter’s OnlyFans profile is completely unnecessary. Couldn’t you focus more on local or regional sports instead of advertising someone’s pornography? Such filth shouldn’t be promoted in our newspapers.
