Trump interfering

It is hard to believe U.S. president-elect Donald Trump wasn’t aware during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to Mar-a-Lago that Conservatives are favoured to win in the next federal election

I bet Trump was salivating when Trudeau stated the 25 per cent tariff on Canada’s exports would cost an estimated $2,000 a person. It’s such a perfect scenario for Trump, who loves controversy. He can help Canada’s Conservative Party and watch Trudeau’s Liberals squirm prior to the 2025 federal election.

Make walkers safer

Collision statistics confirm driving through neighbourhoods is a safe way to travel. However, for residents not in cars, it is not so safe.

Increased density also increases the prevalence of businesses such as supermarkets, drug stores and restaurants, resulting in more residents being able to get to these businesses by walking and sometimes cycling. (Seeing cycling purely as a commuting action misses much of its value.) These journeys, added to walking the dog, walking to bus stops, or just getting outside, means the number of “metal-non-metal interactions” increases exponentially.

It seems everyone’s a fan of driving quickly and unfettered to their destination, except when it’s other people speeding through our neighbourhood en route to theirs. Zoning and regulation of public land should surely include everyone’s physical safety, even at the expense of reduced convenience for drivers.

What a wonderful photo to show the caring work of that firefighter. Very well done. We need more positive photos like that one.

Rebate an insult

Regarding the article PM holds firm on rebate plan (Nov. 30)

The $4.6 billion-plus it will cost taxpayers by increasing our debt while decreasing income from GST and only going to select groups chosen to receive this so-called benefit is difficult to accept. The cost to businesses to adjust their tills twice for a short period of time is ludicrous.

As for the NDP, supporting this is just another of example of saying on thing and doing the opposite, at which they are masters. It comes across as not care about constituents only about saving their jobs and reaching qualifications for their pensions.

Give ’em snow tires

Where is the customer support for Amazon drivers?

As a supporter of Amazon, I was disgusted to learn they do not supply their drivers with snow tires. During Thursday’s snowstorm, our driver got stuck on our street and my 73-year-old husband spent an hour or so in the storm trying to help him.

The driver’s van was rear-wheel drive and wasn’t getting anywhere. Finally a couple of other Amazon employees came to help. Four hours later, the van is still stuck on the street. Another Amazon van came to help and it too got stuck and has been stuck for the last three hours.

If it wasn’t for the drivers, you would not get your orders on time. Please, Amazon, help out with proper tires and equipment for the people who deliver for your company around the clock.

Amazon, you still have some work to do.
