A new eatery steps from London’s Via Rail station is joining the city’s booming Indian food scene.

Bombay Social Club, a fusion of Bombay’s taste with other cuisines, is opening at 182 York St. in mid-December, bringing Mumbai’s spices and Bollywood’s cinema magic to London.

The Bollywood-theme is all over its walls, with caricatures of Indian celebrities from its film industry.

The eatery also will have a sports-bar vibe with big screens TVs.

“It caters to all the people, and it’s not just for a certain community, “owner Omkar Karekar said. “So, everyone can come to socialize.”

On the menu is a fusion of South-Asian cuisine, Mexican and, of course, Canadian ingredients.

From the well-known butter chicken to tacos with a South-Asian take, to innovations such as chicken smoked with maple leaves, customers will be trying something different, Karekar said.

“We didn’t want to go into typical Indian food, because a lot of people are doing it right now,” he said. “Each dish will have a twist.”

Karekar hopes the downtown location, across the street from the train station, will attract people working in the area.

“In the past few years, we’ve seen so many people coming to London and settling down here, and of course downtown is getting busier, and the location is perfect for a restaurant to serve a different clientele,” he said.

Karekar said he wants to make the menu affordable to attract young people such as students from Fanshawe College.

Karekar is opening the restaurant with Sid Bichu; both come from the hospitality industry.

Karekar came to Canada in 2014. Prior to that, he had been a chef in restaurants in Singapore and the United Kingdom. He chose London instead of “crowded” Toronto, where there was “a better opportunity to settle down,” he said.

“Now the community (in London) is growing, and it’s a good opportunity to serve people,” he said.
