Talk about picking up the cheque.

After his London restaurant was hit by dine-and-dash thieves, the owner of Spageddy Eddy’s says he was pleasantly surprised when a group of Londoners who heard about his story showed up at his business this week and covered the $150 tab.

Now, the local business is paying the gesture forward.

“It was a big surprise,” said Thomas Bikos, owner of Spageddy Eddy’s.

“When my dad told me they had come in and done that, I was like, ‘Wow, that’s so nice of people.’ That goes to show not everybody’s a bad person.”

Two weeks ago, the Richmond Street restaurant took to social media to warn other eateries after three people dined at the restaurant on Oct. 6 and left without paying the $150 bill.

The restaurant’s post, which included photos of the culprits captured on surveillance footage, prompted a response from other local businesses who had also dealt with similar situations, including some alleging they fell victim to the same people.

But Bikos said he never expected the story would also spark an act of generosity like this one.

Bikos said restaurant staff don’t know who the man who gave the business the money or his friends were, adding they didn’t want any credit.

“We said to them, ‘That’s really kind of you but it’s not necessary,’ but they insisted, so we took it,” said Bikos, adding the restaurant has decided to donate the money to the London Humane Society as a way to pay it forward.

“Since people were so nice to come and do that for us, we decided that we’d kind of give back to the Humane Society instead of just keeping it and putting it in our pocket; it didn’t feel right.”

Bikos said the restaurant made a report to police about the incident, but is not aware of any arrests.

He also added the act of generosity now outweighs the initial bad experience.

“The fact somebody took time out of their day and their money to come and try to make it right with us is awesome. Like, it’s just so kind, right?” Bikos said. “So many good things happened from it that, you know, I’m not even upset about it anymore.”
