The Basketball Super League has a new commissioner and the defending champion London Lightning will have another foe to contend with this coming season.

Officials on Tuesday announced the appointment of Sudbury native Devin Kinsella to the league’s top post after officially adding a seventh team – the Michigan-based Pontiac Pharaohs – recently.

Kinsella has an extensive background in online marketing that should help him forge strong sales, partnerships and sponsorship opportunities. Officials say they are hoping he proves to be a “catalyst for positive change and future development” of the league

“We are thrilled to welcome Devin to our team,” said BSL president David Magley, who runs the league with his wife Evelyn. “Devin’s love for basketball and commitment to community will be instrumental as we continue our mission to create valuable assets within each organization.”

The Pharaohs are the league’s first United States-based team and the expectation is that more will follow. Pontiac was part of the TBL (The Basketball League) and its crossover games with the BSL last year. The Pharaohs lost 122-105 to the Lightning at Budweiser Gardens Feb. 7.

“It’s exciting to be a part of the growth and expansion from our time spent in the TBL to the BSL,” Pontiac franchise owner Chris Jackson said.

The BSL plans to begin its 2024-25 season in mid-November and run through April. London beat the K-W Titans in the championship series of the inaugural campaign last spring. It was a continuation of London’s dominance in pro basketball: In its former loop, the National Basketball League of Canada, the Lightning delivered owner Vito Frijia six championships between 2012 and 2023.
