A stretch of Hwy. 401 in Elgin County was closed early Saturday in the fallout of a serious single-vehicle crash, Elgin OPP report.

An Ornge air ambulance was called in and the section of the highway between Orford and Furnival roads, southwest of London, closed in both directions, police said. The two roads intersecting the 401 are about 20 kilometres apart.

Police credit quick-thinking civilian in boater’s rescue

A civilian’s quick reaction saved a boater who fell overboard into Lake Huron last month, police say.

Lambton OPP said provincial and Anishinabek police officers were called out shortly after 6 p.m. July 26 by a report of a boater in the water near Bluepoint.

“Thanks to the quick and heroic actions of a civilian, the individual was rescued and brought to shore before emergency services arrived on scene,” police said.

The civilian heard a “mayday” call over marine radio, spotted the boater and was able to bring them to safety, police said.

The boater wasn’t injured, OPP said.

“The Lambton OPP extends its gratitude to the quick-thinking civilian who played a pivotal role in the rescue,” police said in the news release.

Already this summer, there have been five water-related deaths in Southwestern Ontario’s Great Lakes, including two in Lake Huron.

Police said a 29-year-old Sarnia resident was charged under the Canada Shipping Act with failing to have proof of competency onboard a pleasure craft and operating a vessel with safety equipment that was not in good working order.
