A search for a missing kayaker that began nearly a week ago in Lake Huron ended Tuesday when the body of a 57-year-old London man was located north of Grand Bend, OPP said.
The man’s body was found near St. Joseph beach, West Region OPP said in a social media post at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
“The OPP extends condolences to their family. Thank you to everyone who assisted in the search effort to locate this individual,” OPP said.
The name of the London man was not released.
Huron County OPP began the search after receiving several marine calls at about 9:40 p.m. on July 3 about a kayak adrift in Lake Huron in the area of Sunview Drive just north of Grand Bend.

Residents in the area reported seeing a helicopter searching the lake and flares dropped into the water at night. The Huron OPP marine unit continued to search for the missing kayaker in the following days.
“We heard about the incident, about a lost kayak. We knew there was a big search,” said Kyla Vandendool, who works at Masse fruit and vegetable stand in Zurich, near St. Joseph.
“There was definitely concern with people not knowing what was going on. There was a lot of talk about it. A lot of locals shop here.”
Known for its agriculture and located on the shores of Lake Huron, villages in the area include Dashwood, Bayfield, Hensall, Varna and Zurich. Its popularity among beachgoers and tourists means searches like this one occur fairly regularly.
It was three weeks ago when a man suffering from hypothermia and floating in Lake Huron nearly five kilometres from shore was rescued by the Coast Guard, Huron OPP said on June 15.
The man, who was operating a vessel, was found off Goderich harbour. He was wearing a life jacket “which saved his life,” police said.
