The London area was placed under a snow squall watch Tuesday amid a winter storm that could dump up to 25 centimetres of snow on the region and plunge it into a deep freeze.

Canada’s weather agency warned against non-essential travel as the storm beared down on the area off Lake Huron, bringing flurries that will intensify Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

In all, Environment Canada is forecasting snowfall amounts between 15 and 25 cm, “with higher amounts possible if snow squalls become stationary over one area.”

“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” the agency warned.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

The wintry blast will be coupled with freezing temperatures.

According to Environment Canada’s forecast, Tuesday’s daytime high will be -4 C, with the wind chill making it feel more like -15 C during the day and -16 C at night.

Wednesday is expected to bring more of the same bone-chilling cold, with temperatures dropping to -6 C during the day and -12 C at night.

The latest winter wallop comes only days after another system brought frigid temperatures to the region and enveloped much of the U.S. Midwest and portions of some states along Lake Erie’s southern shore in blizzard-like conditions.

Ice and snow blanketed major roads in Kansas, western Nebraska and parts of Indiana, where the National Guard was activated to help stranded motorists.

At least five people were reported to have died in the U.S. following the storm, which also led to mass school closings  and hundreds of car crashes south of the border.
