Southwestern Ontario is bracing for the first significant snowfall of the new year.

Environment Canada on Friday issued a snow squall warning for London and other parts of Southwestern Ontario, including Huron and Perth counties.

Some parts of the region could see between 20 and 35 centimetres of snow by Saturday night, leading to dangerous driving conditions and possible road closures, officials with the national weather agency said.

“A burst of heavy snow and blowing snow is expected this afternoon as snow squalls push south,” Environment Canada said in the warning issued on Friday morning. “More stationary snow squall bands will set up this afternoon and evening bringing higher snowfall accumulations tonight into Saturday.”

Weather conditions can change quickly and without warning, Environment Canada said, urging the public to monitor forecasts and alerts.

Forecasters were calling for seven straight days of snow in London, with sub-zero temperatures and overnight lows dipping into minus double-digits on some days.

Environment Canada also issued a weather advisory for Woodstock and parts of Oxford County, saying a winter weather travel advisory was in effect on Friday and the region could see as much as 15 cm of snow by the end of the day.

Ontario Provincial Police urged drivers to be cautious on Southwestern Ontario roads but hadn’t reported any significant crashes as of late Friday morning. In its warning for London, Environment Canada officials also noted the potential dangers for drivers.

“Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather,” they said in a statement.
