A retail business in Exeter is out almost $10,000 after an employee fell for a Bitcoin scam, Huron OPP said.

The employee of the business that wasn’t identified by police received a text message on their phone that appeared to be from their supervisor, police said Thursday. The message instructed the employee to collect all cash on site and deposit it into a Bitcoin machine in London and to keep the transaction a secret, OPP said on Thursday.

The employee deposited $9,800 in cash into the Bitcoin machine. When the employee contacted their supervisors directly to follow up, they discovered they had been scammed, police said. Huron OPP were notified on Dec. 28.

Provincial police are looking for more potential complainants after arresting an alleged peeper late Sunday in Leamington.

The Leamington detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police said it received a report around 11:20 p.m. Sunday about a “suspicious person” at a home on Deer Run Road.

Officers responded and arrested a 42-year-old Leamington man. The suspect is charged with voyeurism, trespassing at night, and public mischief.

The man is scheduled to appear in Windsor’s Ontario Court of Justice on Jan. 17.

Police said a publication ban has been issued and they will not release any more information about the case.

But investigators said the investigation continues, and they believe there may be additional complainants.
