A police investigation in a small Southwestern Ontario town that was initially sparked by multiple reports of a drone dropping “an unknown substance” on homes, vehicles and properties has come to a more natural conclusion.
It was a heron. And it was dropping feces. Police concluded that “no criminal activity had occurred.”
The investigation started after Waterloo Regional Police say they received multiple reports on Aug. 23 of a drone “engaging in harassing behaviour” in the area of Stanley Street and Main Street in Ayr – a town of roughly 5,000 people located south of Waterloo.

Police initially said that “on several occasions” a drone was “flying over residential homes and dropping an unknown substance onto houses, vehicles and property.” They asked anyone with information about the incidents to contact them.
Tuesday, police issued an update stating the investigation was now done. Working with University of Guelph experts, police say they determined it was “feces from a heron” – a bird distinctive for its long legs and long neck.
