One suspect in a southeast London break-in during which two people were seriously injured has been arrested, police say.

In a Wednesday update, police say 29-year-old Londoner Shayne Cousins was arrested Tuesday morning in Oshawa by the provincial repeat offender parole enforcement squad, and has been returned to London.

Police say a pair of masked men who were armed entered a home on Meadowgate Boulevard, southeast of Commissioners Road and Highbury Avenue, on Saturday around 12:20 a.m.

Four people were inside the home. The intruders assaulted and restrained a woman and then confronted two men, police said.

“One of the suspects fired a shot toward one of the victims, missing him,” police spokesperson Sgt. Sandasha Bough previously told The London Free Press. “And the other suspect assaulted the second man with a firearm.”

Two people fled the home and a neighbour called 911 after hearing the gunshot. The invaders stole items and fled before police arrived. A search of the area came up empty, police said.

A man and woman were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, while a second man was treated for minor injuries and a third man wasn’t hurt, police said.

Investigators do not believe the break-in was a random incident, police said.

Cousins, one of two suspects, was expected to appear in court Wednesday on nine charges including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, use of a firearm during the commission of an indictable offence and theft of less than $5,000.

Police are still asking for help in identifying a second suspect who they describe as a Black man, between 30 and 35, about six-feet tall with a heavy build. He was wearing a grey sweater, grey jogging pants and a balaclava.

Anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call London police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
