Make 407 free

We need to push Premier Doug Ford for provincewide referendum on his plan for a tunnel under Highway 401 near Toronto.

This generational plan will cost a half a trillion dollars. That’s Ontario-wide tax money not just the City of Toronto.

In the Greater Toronto Area there is the obvious, under-utilized Highway 407 toll road. Ford could buy or expropriate it, make it free and spread out the huge volume of vehicles.

This is a case of do the immediate, easy solution and, in 50 years, rethink the tunnel or clear the airspace above Highway 401 route for Jetson-like travel.

Tunnel bad idea

Doug Ford’s plan to build a 50 km traffic tunnel under the GTA is hilarious. Even if it opened tomorrow and didn’t bankrupt the province for decades it would be a white elephant within a year. By then, it would have attracted so many vehicles it would have become the world’s largest underground parking lot.

Silly ideas such as this are the product of a cars-only mentality toward transportation. Every other city with Toronto’s population introduced rail transit, bike lanes and other ideas years ago. One wonders just how much the auto and oil industries paid the premier to make a fool of himself.

Nice alternative

The next time Thames Valley District school board administrators plan a meeting to discuss how to save money, perhaps they should consider using the board office at Dundas Street at Highbury Avenue. There are plenty of conference rooms there.

They could look out the windows and watch children play at the school next door, which is much cheaper than a Blue Jays’ game. I can think of three Tim Horton’s restaurants nearby. They could treat themselves to coffee and Timbits.

This would be a lot cheaper than $38,000.

Spare students

Every single fine for an open alcohol container at homecoming should be overturned. If you can smoke crack and shoot up in any doorway on Dundas Street, what’s the difference other than some are having harmless fun, and the others are putting a strain on the system.

What’s the logic behind ticketing students other than, if someone can go to Western University, they must have money and can afford to pay a fine. This is backward and does nothing positive for our deteriorating core area.

Don’t forget

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau knows an election is imminent and brags about the dental plan and pharmacare, but fails to mention he raised federal carbon and alcohol taxes.

His economic and immigration policies caused inflation and higher interest rates.
