London police officer cleared in watchdog’s probe

Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared a London police officer of wrongdoing after a man suffered a fractured ankle fleeing a home.

Police got a call on May 19, 2024, about a man making threats near Dundas Street and Clarke Road, the Special Investigations Unit said Tuesday.

Officers found the suspect and a chase began, the man ending up inside a home and standing on the window ledge trying to reach the roof, the SIU said in its investigative report.

The man, 32, scaled part way down a downspout, then jumped the rest of the to the ground, the SIU says.

He was arrested and later taken to hospital where it was found his right ankle was fractured, the SIU says.

One officer was the subject of the investigation and there are no reasonable grounds to believe that officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the injury, the SIU concluded.

The SIU investigates all cases of serious injury, death, gunfire and allegations of sexual assault involving officers across Ontario.
