Two people were arrested and one is facing several charges after an hours-long standoff with police in Newbury, police say.

Middlesex OPP said that their officers were dispatched at around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to an address on Broadway Street in Newbury, a village 60 kilometres southwest of London, for a threat complaint.

OPP says that when police arrived, a suspect entered the home and refused to exit, prompting a call to their tactics and rescue units, emergency response team, crisis negotiators, and canine unit to help.

Broadway Street and James Street were closed as a precaution for six hours with no threat to public safety, police said. There were no injuries.

A 39-year-old Newbury man, who was held for bail, is facing two charges of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The second person arrested was released unconditionally, police added.
