One person was still missing after two people were pulled out of Lake Margaret on Monday and sent to hospital.

Just before 8 a.m., St. Thomas police say they were notified of an incident where three adults entered the lake in a canoe and that it had tipped over. The lake is located near the southern edge of the Elgin County city.

Two people were found and sent to hospital in stable condition, but police warned that efforts to find the third person were ongoing on Monday morning and to avoid the area.

There will be a large emergency service presence in the Lake Margaret area as efforts to locate the missing individual, continue,” police said.

The fire department added in a follow up post that the coast guard has arrived on scene with sonar and submersible equipment to help in the search.

Both police and the fire department are promising to provide updates as the search continues.

The incident is the latest in what has been dangerous summer for London and the region’s waterways, claiming 12 lives.

Last month, a vigil was held for seven-year-old Anna Bielli after she was swept away by a storm-swollen Thames River 300 metres east of the Adelaide Street Bridge in northeast London. Her body was found in the river near Western University after a three-day search.

Also in August, an unidentified body was fished out of the Thames River, while two people drowned in Lake Erie in separate incidents at the Leamington pier and near Turkey Point.

In July, 14-year-old Omer Buz went into Lake Erie at Port Stanley’s main beach but didn’t resurface, triggering an anguishing search that ended with the recovery of his body two days later. A day after Buz went missing, four people were rescued from the water at the same beach.

Two people including a kayaker have died in Lake Huron this summer, with other drownings in Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and the Grand River.
