Damage pegged $100K in northwest London house fire

No one was injured in a house fire in northwest London on Tuesday evening but damage is estimated at $100,000.

London Fire Department officials say crews were on the scene of blaze at about 6 p.m. for “search, rescue and fire control” after the blaze began in the basement of the home located at 1371 Lawson Rd., which is in a residential area in northwest London.

Two hours later, fire prevention investigators were called to determine the origin and cause of the fire. There were no injuries, fire officials said.

Police seek details on empty kayak

Ontario Provincial Police in Huron County are asking for the public to help provide information about a missing or overdue kayaker after a blue Pelican-branded kayak washed up onto the shore at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday

The kayak was found near Northwood Beach Resort, about three kilometres north of Bayfield, police said.

Anyone with formation on any missing or overdue kayakers, or anyone who is missing a kayak, is asked to contact Huron OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Officers cleared in arrested man’s injuries

Two unidentified Windsor police officers have been cleared of wrongdoing in connection to a man who was injured during his arrest in April at an east-side home.

The officers were called to a residence in the area of Wyandotte Street East and Lauzon Road by the homeowner who wanted the man, who she reported was intoxicated and belligerent, removed from the home, Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, said.

Police said they advised the man he had to leave but allowed him to go to the home’s basement to collect his personal belongings.

A short time later, a physical altercation occurred between the officers and the man, who was arrested and handcuffed, the SIU said.

The 45-year-old man refused medical treatment and was eventually taken into custody by Peel Regional Police officers on an outstanding warrant. He was transported to Brampton.

It was later determined he suffered orbital bone fractures, the SIU said.

Witnesses, including the complainant, gave differing descriptions of what ensued during the incident. As was their legal right, neither of the officers involved agreed to an interview with the SIU or the release of their notes.

Joseph Martino, director of the Special Investigations Unit, released his decision on the case last week. Martino said there was conflicting evidence given about whether the officers had lawful authority when they moved to arrest the man.

Martino determined the officers did not commit a criminal offence in connection to the incident.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports of sexual assault, death or serious injury involving police provincewide.
