St. Thomas and Detroit both love the auto industry. Now there’s a shared love of beer and a rock legend.

Railway City Brewing is brewing Red Rocker Lager for Sammy Hagar’s new craft beer company. Brewed in Michigan by Brew Detroit for the American market, it’s brewed in St. Thomas for Ontario before being rolled out to other provinces. The recipe is by brewmaster Cameron Schubert of Brew Detroit and Red Rocker started sales in October 2023 in Michigan.

Hagar introduced Red Rocker to Canada at his Best of All Worlds tour stop in Toronto in July.

It’s 4.3 per cent alcohol and packaged at Railway City in 473 ml cans priced at $57.12 for a case of 24. It’s sold through the Railway City online store.

The name Red Rocker is part of the Hagar persona that started in 1977 and owes a debt to a journalist who dubbed him as such in a review after he performed dressed head to toe in red and playing a red Les Paul guitar while singing his song Red.

LEANING LIGHTHOUSE GOES FOR BEER

Helping history right itself is Be the Beacon, a special edition lager from Railway City.

It’s brewed as a summer sessionable with a greater purpose of building awareness about and funds for the leaning 184-year-old Port Burwell lighthouse.

The lighthouse is closed to tourists and a permanent fix could cost about $1.5 million.

Be the Beacon is at Railway City in St. Thomas and its online store as well as Port Burwell restaurants such as Izzy’s Schooners and Straiko’s By the Lake. Look for the 473 ml cans also at Port Burwell-area agency stores.

Ronald McDonald House is the fundraising focus for a new beer from Broken Rail in St. Marys. The release for Finish Line Lime Lager coincided with a London to St. Marys relay race. BackRoads donated hops – it has a hop yard in Parkhill and a craft beer bar and shoe store in London’s West 5. Finish Lime is 4.3 per cent alcohol.
