An adrift kayak has sparked a massive search effort near the popular Lake Huron beach town of Grand Bend, Ontario Provincial Police say.
The probe is based near Lake Huron at Dashwood Road, just north of Grand Bend, the OPP’s Huron detachment said in a statement on Thursday morning.
“Investigators are conducting an active search in the area to determine if an individual is in the water of Lake Huron,” police said.

The search was continuing and updates were expected to be provided when new information becomes available, police said.
The unoccupied vessel was found by the Canadian Coast Guard, police say.
“Expect to see a large police presence,” OPP said, adding there’s no additional threat to public safety.
Dashwood Road is located 13 kilometres north of Grand Bend. Police were asking people to avoid the area amid the ongoing investigation. The Huron OPP is requesting anyone with information to call 1-888-310-1122.
Neighbouring residents have reported on social media seeing large flares being dropped overnight from a plane, as well as an OPP boat and a helicopter searching the lake.
Known for its agriculture and located on the shores of Lake Huron, villages in the area include Dashwood, Bayfield, Hensall, Varna and Zurich. Its popularity among beachgoers and tourists means searches like this one occur fairly regularly.
It was three weeks ago when a man who was suffering from hypothermia and floating three miles from Lake Huron’s shore was rescued by Coast Guard members, Ontario Provincial Police said on June 15. The man, who was operating a vessel, was found off Goderich habour, police said. He was wearing a life jacket “which saved his life,” Huron OPP officials said in a statement.
