Our family would like to honor the loss of our beautiful, sweet daughter, Mykal West, who was taken from us in the tragic pedestrian-train collision on Jan. 4 at about 6 a.m. She was a shining light and deeply loved by her family, friends, and children. We wish to express our disappointment with news reports that labelled and diminished her as “a 34-year-old homeless woman.” It hurts our hearts that the failure of systems to support a person in need then becomes her sole identity.
