New play explores fascinating London roots of Sweet Marie, a 19th-century sensation

The Play: The world premiere of Sweet Marie, a comedy by Adam Corrigan Holowitz and Kydra Ryan inspired by a true story of how, in 1891, after a walk in London’s Victoria Park, American poet Cy Warman wrote the poem Sweet Marie for his beloved, Marie Jones. The poem became the lyrics for one of the most popular songs of the times and was also the namesake for the popular chocolate bar. The play is described as a “fast-paced, fictionalized comedy” where Warman, known as the “poet of the Rockies” who has no problem writing stirring verses about mountain and railways, struggles to “articulate his affections” for Marie.
