A person from London faces several charges after attempting to flee the scene of a collision between an ambulance and a passenger vehicle that sent several people to hospital, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police in Middlesex County say officers and paramedics and firefighters were called to Centre Road north of Second Street in Adelaide Metcalfe – a township about 40 kilometres west of London – just after 5 p.m. on Monday for a report of a crash between the two vehicles.

The driver of the passenger vehicle ran from the scene of the crash, police said, but after officers “flooded the area,” they  were found a short time later near the site of the crash.

The two people in the ambulance at the time of the collision, along with the driver who was placed under arrest after being located by police, were taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said. No civilians were in the ambulance at the time of the crash, police said.

Centre Road was closed for about three hours while officers investigated, police said.

An investigation revealed that a person known to the driver had been assaulted before the collision, police said.

A 40-year-old from London faces multiple Highway Traffic Act and criminal charges, such as: impaired driving, failure to stop after an accident, forcible confinement, assault causing bodily harm, assault of a spouse, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and driving while under suspension, police said.

The accused was held for bail, police said.
