With the new year just around the corner, I wanted to talk about resolutions.

As gardeners we spend a lot of time thinking about our garden and dreaming about what is to come.

As I look back on 2024 it was a wet season and because of the rain plants grew well and many exceeded their traditional size making our gardens full. Due to the rain our grass didn’t brown or go dormant over the summer.

I personally stopped making resolutions years ago as I found I get disappointed with myself when I don’t follow through. Instead, I create a wish list and I add to this list throughout the season. My list will start with things like spending more time enjoying my garden and less time worrying about what I am not doing in the garden. I would like to redo a certain area of my garden by relocating some plants or giving them away. Then I can add new plants in that location.

Seed and plant catalogues are my biggest weakness. I want everything I see in them. I start dreaming and creating a list of plants I think I want and where it might fit in my garden.

Don’t beat yourself up when it comes to your gardens and lawn. Gardening is meant to be relaxing and energizing and when it becomes too much work, it is time to sit back and figure out what is going on. Do you have too much garden and too little time? Or maybe it is time for a bit of an update to give you a new look. We can work on that in the new year.
