Duo charged after store-theft suspects try to run from London police

A London man and woman are both charged after city police say they arrested a pair of suspects who tried to run from officers investigating a theft at an east-end business.

London police say it was about 8:50 p.m. Monday when a man and woman entered a business near the intersection of Clarke Road and Dundas Street. Once inside the business, they stole items and walked out, police said, adding the value of the stolen items was more than $1,500.

Police responded, were given a description, then found two suspects. During an attempted arrest, the duo tried to run from officers but were located a short distance away, police said.

Both suspects were also wanted on outstanding warrants, police said.

A man, 37, and a woman, 35, both from London are jointly charged with theft under $5,000 and resisting arrest. The man faces an additional charge of public mischief.

Both accused were scheduled to appear in London court on Tuesday in relation to the charges.

Domestic violence charges

A West Elgin resident is facing several charges after Ontario Provincial Police say a person assaulted their spousal with a weapon.

Around 10 p.m. on Nov. 23, Ontario Provincial Police officers in Elgin County were called to a home in West Elgin to investigate allegations of intimate partner violence, police said.

A 36-year-old from West Elgin is charged with assault on a spouse with a weapon, assault on a spouse and domestic mischief. Police said the victim’s physical injuries were not serious.

Man charged after RIDE check

A Chatham man is charged with impaired driving after police say a driver was stopped with a bottle of liquor in their vehicle.

It was about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday when Elgin OPP officers were conducting roadside-sobriety checks on the eastbound off-ramp of Highway 401 at Bloomfield Road in Chatham-Kent.

Police say officers stopped a passenger vehicle and checked the driver’s sobriety. The driver was taken into custody for further testing.

A 30-year-old from Chatham is facing several alcohol-related charged. The driver was hit with a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and had their vehicle impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Chatham court on Dec. 16.
