Change systems

Our electoral system needs to be changed.

To get the prime minister you want, you must vote for the local federal candidate of the same political party. To get the premier you want, you must do the same.

What happens if your local candidate does not align with your beliefs?

If you like the leader of their federal or provincial party, you would have to sacrifice your vote to get them into office or not vote at all.

Why not vote for the position of prime minister or premier.

Local representation would be much better as well, because you would be able to vote for the person who would best represent the riding.

Why has nobody taken this on?

Bob Ward, St. Thomas

Longer sentences

Violent crime is out of control. Witness the recent gun battle in Toronto where 15 illegal guns were taken off the street. The majority of the criminals involved have previous records and in some cases were out on bail and had weapons bans.

Ever since the civil liberties group managed to handcuff the police from doing random street checks, there has been a proliferation of guns in the hands of gang members. The justice system has been granting bail to far too many repeat offenders, which makes our streets unsafe.

It is long past time to change the narrative with tougher sentencing, including 20 years for anyone smuggling firearms into Canada.

Perhaps the money earmarked for useless firearms acquisition program would be better spent on building more jails.

Limit greed

I just spent 10 minutes getting into a package containing a razor with extra blades. It was half the price of five blades with no razor, which was as heavily packaged.

We restrict pay increases, limit speeds, control alcohol and drug consumption. I feel it’s only fair to start limiting greed by corporations and selfish individuals who measure worth in dollar signs rather then respecting our planet. All of us who share it have an innate right to a decent life as well.

Appropriation

Regarding Wayne Newton’s column, Advent beer packages must be ordered soon (Nov. 16).

I find this promotion disgusting, a disrespectful appropriation of a Christian practice. It does bring to mind a boycott of beer.

Don’t worry

Replying to Dennis Lee’s letter, Reason to worry (Nov. 14).

A landslide mandate was given to U.S. president-elect Donald Trump. Obviously, this is what Americans wanted.

Trump is not a war monger; he wants prosperity for everyone.

Europe had problems before, and they will resolve it.

Sleep well.
