Three hurt after small plane crashes, flips over amid landing attempt

Three people were injured after a small plane crash on a rural road south of Strathroy Saturday afternoon, provincial police said.

Middlesex County OPP, paramedics and firefighters responded to a plane crash on Olde Drive, between Springfield Road and Melbourne Road, at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday, police said in a news release Sunday morning.

Of the four people on board the small plane at the time of the crash, three were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Middlesex OPP said.

The fourth was not injured, police said.

The police investigation revealed the pilot was attempting to land the small plane when it crashed and flipped over.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, an independent national agency that investigates air, marine, pipeline and rail transportation incidents, has been notified and will continue with the investigation, Middlesex OPP said.

Olde Drive is approximately eight kilometres northwest of the Melbourne Airport, a private, grass airstrip just off Longwoods Road.

Two charged with drug trafficking

Two St. Thomas residents are charged with drug trafficking after police seized cocaine during a search on Saturday.

A 34-year-old and a 24-year-old, both from St. Thomas, were charged with one count each of possession of cocaine for the purposes of trafficking, St. Thomas police said in a news release Saturday.

Police seized about 70 grams of cocaine, police said. The drugs have an estimated street value of $7,000, St. Thomas police said.

The identities of the individuals and the location of the police search were not disclosed by police.

The arrests mark the conclusion of a investigation into cocaine trafficking in St. Thomas, police said. The accused were taken to police headquarters and released on an undertaking with a future court date.
