Growing Concerns: Workshops sometimes cheaper way to make holiday planter

Even though the leaves are late falling this year, most gardeners have pretty much put our gardens to bed and are waiting for spring.

It is still too warm to be wrapping any of your outdoor plants for winter. We almost need a first snow fall before we should begin wrapping trees. I plan on wrapping holiday lights around the evergreens in my front garden. Not only do they light the garden for the holidays, the lights help protect the branches from the weight of the snow. By wrapping the string of lights around the evergreens, it holds their branches in place. I unplug them in January and remove the lights in spring.

Now that it is November, garden centers all will be having their holiday open houses. They can be so much fun and offer a wealth of new ways of doing winter planters or holiday trees. I like to pop in a day or two before the event and look at everything so I know what I might need to buy a the event, when the specials are on. This helps me to plan ahead and not buy impulsively.

Many garden centers offer winter greens workshops for both indoor and outdoor arrangements. It often is less expensive to do a workshop and take home your creation than to buy all the things you need to do the arrangement on your own. When you buy bundles individually you end up with a lot leftover. When you take a workshop, you don’t have the same amount of waste.

I like to get a couple of friends together, take the workshop and go out for lunch or do some shopping before the festive season takes over and we are too busy to catch up. Garden clubs  also will be doing some bazaars and this is another place to get some great items to decorate your home as well as some wonderful gifts.

Don’t forget about all those plants you have brought inside for the winter.  They are going to need to be watered and checked on regularly. The window I use for all my plants during the winter is also the same spot I put my holiday tree, so before long, I will move all my plants into another room and make sure the grow lights are set up till I can bring them back to their happy place.

Take some time to visit your favorite garden centre and get inspired for the holiday season.
