Cars essential
In his letter Cars essential, Harvey Sharpe is wondering why the politicians are not widening the streets in a city that is rapidly growing.
There are two answers.
Firstly, it doesn’t solve traffic. In 1962, Highway 401 across the top of Toronto was four lanes. Since then, Toronto has doubled in population and the 401 has widened to 16 lanes, and the commute time is worse. This is called induced usage.

With no expressway, this city could double the lanes on all its major streets, and within a generation the traffic could be worse, for the same reason.
The second reason the city is not widening streets is expropriation. Imagine the cost of ripping out every single heritage house on Richmond Street. That is exactly what the city would be contemplating.

Ford should resign
It would be better for the province if Doug Ford gave the $3 billion he’s using to give Ontarians each $200 to hospitals and schools. And please, ask him to resign or don’t vote for him in the next election.

Trudeau should quit
Justin Trudeau, do Canada a favour and quit. Go back to your previous job of teaching kids.

Fire risk too great
Electric vehicles have been pounded down our throats for some time as the great saviour of our planet from the ever-rising CO2 levels around the world. Recently, I’ve learned that lithium-ion batteries installed in EVs and all sorts of other devices are at great danger of exploding and or catching fire.
How safe is a garage at home with an EV parked inside? How safe is a car dealership with hundreds of EVs parked bumper to bumper? We all know the risks associated with gasoline. Who will step up and explain the risks associated with lithium-ion to all of us? What can we do to mitigate the spontaneous combustion of these batteries?
Selfishly, sparing my family from a deadly fire is much more important to me than saving the planet from raising CO2 levels.

Let me pay my way
I’ve run into several circumstances where parking requires payment, or at least registration, by cellphone. Obliging me to carry a cellphone because it makes your business easier or more profitable is, quite simply, bullying.
It’s ironic that we demand businesses be accessible to those reliant on assistive devices, yet we are so compliant when they demand we adopt the devices they find economical for themselves.
