Londoners at fault

In her letter to the editor, We need answers on transportation (Oct. 17), Beth McCracken gives a good, detailed description of London’s poor transportation planning.

There is another culprit in London’s problems: Londoners themselves.

This city contains a sizable population that rejects any initiative that might get in the way of their personal vehicles. In their opinion, bike lanes, or mass transit of any scale or type, must be rejected outright. Unfortunately, for the rest of us, our pandering politicians respond to these dreary hissy fits instead of showing real leadership.

A city of this size should have had a comprehensive light rail system with bike lanes on the side streets years ago. Whatever the quality of our transit, we seem to have the system we deserve.

Problem solved

Regarding the article Province to give itself veto power over city bike lanes (Oct. 16)

Thank you, Premier Doug Ford, for prioritizing the big problems in our city.

Once bike lanes are gone, we can finally have more room to sit in congestion and stare at our phones. At least now we will be two abreast so we can see the angry look on our neighbour’s face and know we are not alone.

Misery loves company.

No tip on high price

Regarding the article Tipping point: Canadians push back on gratuities: Survey (Oct. 11).

I am well into my senior years. I do not have a lot of hair left. When I am presented with a bill for $30 for less than 10 minutes in the barber’s chair, I sure am not inclined to add a tip.

Robert Drummond, Exeter

Coverage missed

Why are you not covering cross-country? Previous to last year, The Free Press reported on all the local cross-country meets and had pictures and then, these last two years, there has been nothing.

I guess there has been elementary school coverage, but nothing for the high schools. There are quite a few parents who have been disappointed and talking about it at the meets.

Now that our kids are doing really well, more people are missing the coverage of it than you think.

Stephanie Noubarian, London

Just stay home

Regarding the letter Where are the COVID-19 tests? (Oct. 18)

Why do we even need COVID tests any more? We don’t have flu tests at home, to tell us if we have the flu. COVID has become like the flu, a seasonal illness.

Instead of worrying about testing yourself, do as you always should have done. If you’re sick, stay home to protect others. And remember you can’t get COVID-19 from the vaccine. You can’t get influenza from the flu shot. It’s not a live virus in the vaccine.

If you get sick after one of these shots, it’s coincidental to you having had the vaccine.
