Two seniors killed in separate weekend crashes across London region

Two seniors are dead after separate crashes on rural Southwestern Ontario roads Saturday, including one involving a pedestrian.

A 72-year-old Chatham resident was rushed to hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries, after a two-vehicle crash in western Elgin County Saturday afternoon.

Paramedics, Dutton-Dunwich firefighters and Elgin OPP officers responded to the crash involving two passenger vehicles, including one towing a trailer, on Currie Road north of Fingal Line, outside of Wallacetown.

One driver, a 72-year-old from Chatham, was rushed to hospital by paramedics, where they were later pronounced dead, Elgin OPP said. The identity of the deceased person has not been released by police.

The three occupants of the other vehicle were assessed by paramedics at the scene and were not taken to hospital.

Hours later, in Perth County, provincial police and paramedics responded to a crash involving a pedestrian at about 8 p.m. south of Listowel.

A pedestrian was struck by on Highway 23 north of Line 77, north of the community of Atwood, police said. An 83-year-old resident of North Perth was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the identity of the pedestrian killed in the crash.

There were no other injuries reported, Perth County OPP said.

Elgin OPP asked any witnesses or drivers with dashboard-camera footage to contact police. Anyone with information about either crash is asked to call OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

The two fatal crashes come as the OPP step up traffic enforcement over the Thanksgiving weekend. Operation Impact, a coordinated campaign to target impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers, began on Friday and runs until Thanksgiving Monday.

At the start of the enforcement blitz, OPP reported there have been 295 deaths so far this year on Ontario roadways.
