SARNIA – Who says crime doesn’t pay?
Landing Beckham Edwards in the third round of this year’s Ontario Hockey League draft felt like a steal at the time for the Sarnia Sting, who are already reaping the rewards for their larceny.
The 16-year-old centre leads the Sting with five goals and six points in six points – good for second among all OHL rookies in points. He was just named the league’s rookie of the week after posting three goals and an assist last weekend in three games.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time here in Sarnia so far,” the Komoka native said. “I love playing in front of everyone. It’s a great atmosphere . . . and my time here has been unreal. Everyone has made it an unbelievable experience.”
Edwards is second No. 1 overall pick Ethan Belchetz of the Windsor Spitfires in the rookie points race. The six-foot-one, 170-pound Edwards also had the Sting’s only power-play goal through six games.
“It’s been really good,” he said of playing in the OHL. “It’s what I’ve been expected. It’s really fast. Everyone is a good player. The boys on the team have made it really easy to adjust to everything, like, the league, the players.”
Edwards and fellow Sting rookie forward Alessandro Di Iorio should learn soon if they’ll be wearing a Maple Leaf for one of Canada’s two teams at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Sarnia Nov. 1-9.
