One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash south of the Oxford County town of Thamesford on Saturday evening, police say.

Officers with the Ontario Provincial Police detachments in Oxford and Middlesex counties, along with firefighters and paramedics, were called to a two-vehicle crash at 17th Line and 19th Line in Zorra Township at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, police said in a statement on Sunday morning.

That intersection is in a rural area west of Ingersoll.

Eight people were rushed to local hospitals, police said. One person was later pronounced dead in hospital. All other passengers sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

The identity of the deceased and the cause of the crash had not been disclosed by police as of Sunday morning.

The two rural roads, 17th Line and 19th Line, intersect at a ‘T.’ The crossing is controlled by a large stop sign on 17th Line. Traffic on 19th Line does not stop.

Police closed several roads around the crash site for the investigation by the OPP’s technical collision investigators team.

Anyone with information about the crash, including dashboard cam footage, is asked to contact Oxford OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

The stretch of road was the site of a single-vehicle rollover crash in November 2018 that claimed the life of a 21-year-old Ingersoll man.

Police at the time said a vehicle travelling north on 19th Line veered into a ditch, struck a hydro pole and then slammed into a tree. A man was pronounced dead in hospital, police said. Two other male passengers were injured.

Speed and alcohol were considered as contributing factors in the crash, police said.
