Police lay charges in hit-and-run that killed pedestrian

A 27-year-old Wallaceburg resident is charged after a Walpole Island First Nation resident was struck by a vehicle and killed, Ontario Provincial Police say.

OPP officials in Lambton County say it was about 3 a.m. on Aug. 25 when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene. The pedestrian, a 47-year-old from Walpole Island, was pronounced dead, police said.

A Wallaceburg resident has been charged with failing to stop at an accident resulting in death, police said in a statement.

The accused has been released from custody, police said, and is scheduled to next appear in court in Sarnia on Sept. 25.

16-year-old charged after knife threat

A 16-year-old Chatham boy is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats, police say.

A youth was threatened with a knife in Chatham, Chatham-Kent police said. The teen was then arrested on Sunday around 9 a.m. and taken into custody.

Following a bail hearing, police said the youth was released with conditions into his parents’ care.

Man, woman clash, both charged

A 38-year-old Chatham man is charged with assault and a 31-year-old Chatham woman is charged with assault with a weapon after a dispute on Adelaide Street South in Chatham at about 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, police say.

An argument escalated when a woman threw a bottle at a man, who in turn grabbed the woman, causing her minor physical injury, Chatham-Kent police said. The man and woman were released from custody with conditions and an Oct. 7 court date, police said.
