A suspect in a homicide at a London public housing building last month has been arrested in Halifax, police say.

Investigators obtained an arrest warrant this month for Joseph Veneau, 30, on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Darko Lukic, 48, who died in hospital after he was found critically injured near his apartment building at 122 Base Line Rd. W., west of Wharncliffe Road, on July 20.

A team of officers from the OPP, Halifax police and the RCMP arrested Veneau in the Nova Scotia capital on Saturday, London police said. He was returned to London and scheduled to make a court appearance on Thursday.

Dauntae Johnson, 19, also is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Lukic, the fifth homicide victim in London this year.

Both Veneau and Johnson also are charged with assault with a weapon – Veneau is facing two counts – for alleged attacks with a blunt object on July 19, according to court documents.

A resident at the Base Line Road apartment building previously told The Free Press he saw two men pushing an unconscious Lukic from the building at about 8:15 a.m. on July 20. The men pushed the children’s wagon in which Lukic was lying face-up into a neighbouring townhouse complex and out of sight before an ambulance soon arrived, the witness said.

A candlelight vigil for Lukic drew about two dozen people, including his sister, to the Base Line Road apartment building on Aug. 1. Lukic, a father of two, was remembered for his small acts of kindness shown to fellow residents at the geared-to-income building.
