Marnie Lougheed wants London homicide victim Darko Lukic to be remembered and the people involved in his death brought to justice.

Lukic, 48, died in hospital after he was found critically injured near his apartment building at 122 Base Line Rd. west of Wharncliffe Road, on July 20.

London police have ruled the case a homicide – the city’s fifth of the year – but no suspects have been arrested. Police said Lukic suffered life-threatening injuries in an assault.

Lougheed, who lives across the hall from Lukic on the second floor of the geared-to-income rental building, is organizing a candlelight vigil on Thursday at 8 p.m. outside the Base Line Road apartment.

“Why is it important? So everybody remembers who is, so he gets justice and we all can heal,” Lougheed said of the reason for organizing the event for her former neighbour.

Donations for Lukic’s two children will be collected at the vigil that is open to the public, and a tree will be planted in his memory.

The mood at the 61-unit building that opened in February 2022 has been sombre since police announced Lukic’s death on Friday, Lougheed said.

“It’s been quiet. Everybody is sad,” she said.

Third-floor resident Terry Vuylsteke previously told The Free Press he saw two men pushing an unconscious Lukic from the building around 8:15 a.m. on July 20.

The men pushed the children’s wagon Lukic was lying face-up in into a neighbouring townhouse complex and out of sight before an ambulance arrived about 15 minutes later, he said.

Investigators have appealed to anyone who was in the area on Saturday, July 20 between 5 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. to contact London police at 519-661-5670.
