Julia Tunks, a 17-year-old Olympic hopeful, was second in the senior women’s discus (55.54m) and former Western standout runner Kate Current was second in the senior 1,500m (four minutes, 12.62 seconds). Chloe Knox finished third in the senior triple jump (12.70m).
At the under-20 level, Jackson MacKay (decathlon), Rachel Forsyth (1500) and Payton Serraglio (women’s pole vault) captured gold and earned an automatic berth to the world under-20s in Lima, Peru in late August. Liam Smith was second in the men’s 1500, but is a likely selection for worlds as the top-ranked Canadian. Forsyth also finished second in the women’s 800m.
Jenna Tunks won the national u20 girls discus title (45.89m) but is too young for selection to the Peru meet. Her older sister Julia is still eligible for selection to that team.
Ryan Davies (silver, steeplechase) and Nicole Gallo (bronze, javelin) also earned u20 medals. Paige Marchant was injured and couldn’t compete, but is still the No. 1-ranked women’s 1500m at the u20 level.
The world u20 team will be announced in early August, while Canada’s Olympic team will be unveiled shortly.
