Three people have been charged under the PAWS act – provincial legislation to ensure the humane treatment of animals – after police say two dogs were seen in apparent distress while locked inside a vehicle in a local beach town Sunday evening.
The dogs were taken to Grand Bend’s Ontario Provincial Police detachment after police say officers gained access into the vehicle and removed the animals. The dogs were cared for by officers at the detachment, police said, and the owners were eventually found.

Three people are charged – a 31-year-old from Mississauga, a 26-year-old from Scarborough and a 30-year-old from Gloucester. They’ve each been charged with two counts of causing damage or injury to an animal by failing to provide adequate food, water, care or shelter, police said.
All three of the accused have been released from custody and were scheduled to appear in a Sarnia courtroom on Aug. 12.
The provincial government’s Ontario Animal Protection Call Centre has launched its own investigation and further charges may be pending, police said.
In a statement, police note Ontario has the strongest provincial penalties in Canada for animal abuse and neglect.
Man charged after knife pulled
A man who pulled a knife after he had been told to leave a property was arrested, Chatham-Kent police said.
Officers responded to an assault complaint at about 7:45 a.m. Friday on Grand Avenue West in Chatham.
A man had been directed to leave a property but refused, police said. While being escorted off the premises by security he pulled a knife but eventually dropped it, police said.
A 52-year-old Chatham-Kent man was charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, police said. He was released with conditions and a July 22 court date.
