London skies put on a show Thursday night as a lightning storm passed east of the city, catching the attention of dozens of residents.

The London region and communities to its east were under a weather watch from Environment Canada, which called for possible thunderstorms and rain.

No damage, other than some down trees, had been reported as of mid-day Friday, said Gerald Cheng, a meteorologist with the national weather agency. But it was the striking images of lighting inside a massive cloud that caught the attention of many Londoners.

Cheng described Thursday’s lighting storm as a regular event for this time of the year, saying thunderstorm season is only beginning.

“The ingredients are lined up,he said. When there’s heat and humidity, and there’s a system that is triggering this heat and humidity to rise, that’s when we see these thunderstorms form.”

Though Thursday’s storm was not considered a severe weather event, Cheng said it’s still important to take precautions whenever you hear thunder nearby.

“Even a garden-variety thunderstorm can produce lightning activity, and that’s still a hazard,he said. “So you have to be careful with outdoor activities, especially during this time of the year when temperatures are milder.

“You don’t want to be exposed because anywhere outside is dangerous at this point,he added.
