On Wednesday, the Owen Sound Attack announced the signing of the seventh-overall pick in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection to a standard player agreement.

“I can’t believe it’s happening. None of this would be possible without my family, my late mom, dad and brother supporting me through all of this. I am so thankful for them. I would also like to thank all my coaches throughout the years who made me the player I am today,” Mbuyi said in a team media release.

The winger played 56 games with the Toronto Marlboros under-16 team this past season recording 48 goals and 46 assists.

Mbuyi (pronounced Boo-ee) led the Marlboros at the season-ending OHL Cup with six goals and seven assists in five games. He tied an OHL Cup record with six points in a single game and finished the tournament tied for the scoring lead.

Ahead of the draft, OHL Central Scouting described Mbuyi as a gifted offensive talent who can create offence in several ways. Listed at five-foot-ten and 145 pounds, Mbuyi was among the smallest players selected.

“Even though he isn’t the biggest player in stature, Pierce isn’t afraid to challenge players with the puck and will forecheck hard, compete, and battle for loose pucks in all three zones,” the scouting service said in the 2024 OHL draft guide.

“The Attack would like to welcome Pierce and his family to the Attack organization,” said Attack GM Dale DeGray in the team;s release. “We feel very fortunate to have been able to draft Pierce in this year’s priority selection. Pierce brings an interesting combination of speed, skill and tenacity.”

The team said Mbuyi will wear No. 21 with the Attack while Harry Nansi will switch to No. 34.
