GOLDEN GIRLS

The Tunks sisters of Oakridge were golden in the throws at their home OFSAA track and field championships this past week at Western Alumni Stadium.

Julia Tunks set a provincial high school record in the senior girls discus, bettering her old mark of 55.62 metres last year with a 56.35m effort. She also won the senior shot put in 14.31m.

Jenna Tunks surpassed Trinity Tutti’s eight-year-old novice girls discus standard of 43.40m with a 47.30m throw. She also won the novice shot put in 13.51m.

Medway’s Ryan Georgeson won the boys junior 800m in 1:57.57, Oakridge’s Sophia Bryenton was golden in the girls senior pole vault (3.80m), Noah Mitoraj of Aquinas captured top spot in the boys junior shot put (18.31m) and Laura Van Nes of Clinton St. Anne’s won the girls senior high jump (1.66m).

STA STRIKES OFSAA SILVER

The London St. Thomas Aquinas Aquinas girls soccer team claimed the silver medal at the OFSAA AAA championship in Windsor over the weekend.

The Flames fell 2-0 to Windsor Holy Names in the championship game Saturday after beating Holy Trinity 2-1 in the semifinal and defeating Oakville St. Ignatius 1-0 in the quarter-final.

Aquinas lost 2-1 to Holy Names in pool play. The Flames also beat Kanata Earl of March 8-1, Toronto Lawrence Park 3-2 and Kingston Frontenac 3-1.


RYAN WINTERTON WINS CALDER CUP

Former London Knight Ryan Winterton is a Calder Cup champion.

The first-year pro drew an assist in the Coachella Valley Firebirds’ 5-1, Game 5 win over the Milwaukee Admirals to win the American Hockey League championship Saturday. The 20-year-old had a goal and five points in 12 playoff games for the Seattle farm team this spring.

Winterton scored 22 goals and 35 points in 58 games and also appeared in nine NHL games with the Kraken this season. He had 12 goals and 36 points in 34 games last season with London before a 13-goal, 29-point playoff in leading the Knights to the 2023 OHL final against Peterborough.

MAJOR RALLY

The London Majors scored nine straight runs in the final two innings to erase a four-run deficit to beat the Barrie Baycats 14-9 Sunday in Barrie.

Victor Plaz went four for five with a home run and three runs batted in while Eduardo De Oleo and Byron Reichstein also went deep for the visitors. Braeden Ferrington struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning for the victory.

The Majors improved their Intercounty Baseball League record to 7-3. They face Toronto Friday at Labatt Park (7:35 p.m.) and then hold their Father’s Day Pack the Park game Sunday, 1:05 p.m. at home.
