Oxford OPP are reminding the public that legitimate businesses and the government will not ask for payment with bitcoin or payment cards after two residents were defrauded of $240,000 in separate scams.

Police said they were notified Monday that a resident of Zorra Township is out more than $200,000 after falling for a bitcoin scam, police said.

Another fraud reported on the same day involving Apple Pay cards resulted in the loss of about $40,000 for a Tillsonburg resident.

The cases aren’t connected but involve fraudsters asking for payment through “abnormal means,” police said, such as bitcoin and gift cards, and communicating over the phone or through social media platforms.

Suspect runs into traffic to flee arrest: Police

A man ran into traffic on Exmouth Street in Sarnia to try to prevent officers from arresting him but no one was injured, Sarnia police say.

Residents in the area of Exmouth Street and Trillium Park reported a man in their backyards behaving erratically around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers located a suspect whom they identified as being wanted in London on an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with a release order, but he ran into traffic when they attempted to arrest him, police said.

Citizens helped stop traffic on Exmouth Street while officers were dealing with the suspect.

Officers took hold of the man who attempted to break free and was taken to the ground where he “persisted in his combativeness,” police said.

The man eventually was taken into custody and no officers were injured.

A 39-year-old Sarnia man is charged with resisting arrest and two counts of breaching probation.
