A jury is expected to begin hearing evidence on Thursday at the manslaughter trial of a London woman accused in the death of her mother more than three years ago.
Barbara Cabala, 42, pleaded not guilty on Monday morning to manslaughter before 12 jurors and two alternates were chosen to hear her case.
Cabala is charged in the death of Elzbieta Cabala, 59, who died at her home on Wilkins Street, north of the intersection of Southdale and Wellington roads, in the early evening of July 7, 2021, during what Superior Court Justice Patricia Moore described to the jury panel as “a physical confrontation between Ms. Cabala and her mother.”

After the jurors were chosen, they were dismissed until Thursday. Moore told them that the Crown and the defence will be having discussions about some legal issues that do not require them to be present before the evidence begins.
Moore gave the jury an overview of their duties and trial procedures before dismissing them for the day.
The Crown’s opening statement is expected on Thursday morning before evidence starts to be called. The trial is slated to last anywhere from two to three weeks. Assistant Crown attorney James Spangenberg is expected to make the opening address.
Cabala is being represented in court by a pair of London defence lawyers, Geoff Snow and Danielle D’Alonzo.
