Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after London police officers were called to check on the condition of a woman “in distress” and she was taken to hospital following her arrest.

London police say it was about 8 a.m. on Friday when officers were called to a home on Langarth Street West at Winston Avenue – west of the city’s Old South neighbourhood – amid concerns about “the welfare of a woman.”

Police say officers found the woman a short distance from the home. She was “in distress,” police said, and was holding a weapon that was not specified by police. A taser was used by officers and she was arrested, police said.

The woman was taken by paramedics to hospital “where her condition deteriorated,” police said. She remained in hospital as of Friday night, police said.

The matter is being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit, Ontario’s police watchdog. It’s an independent agency that probes all cases of serious injury, death and allegations of sexual assault involving police officers provincewide.
