Two suspects who impersonated police officers pulled over a driver on Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent and stole their vehicle, Elgin OPP say.

The driver was stopped at about 9 p.m. on Christmas Day in the eastbound lanes of the 401 near Tilbury by two vehicles, one with flashing red and blue lights in the windshield, police said Friday.

Two suspects then approached the vehicle that had been stopped while a third suspect waited in one of the two vehicles.

The driver was told to get out of the vehicle, an “interaction” between the suspects and the driver occurred, and the suspects left the scene in the two vehicles they had been travelling in and the driver’s vehicle, police said.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken by paramedics to a local hospital.

“The OPP wish to remind the public that citizens may ask a police officer to provide the name of their service, detachment, badge number, rank officer’s badge and warrant card,” police said. “The officer should be able to provide this information without delay.”

The investigation is ongoing. Police believe this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety.

“Police impersonation is not a common or widespread issue for the OPP, however, it is considered a serious offence,” Const. Brett Phair told The Daily News.

The suspects are described as a six-foot Black male in his 30s. He was wearing all-black clothing, a black mask and a black ballistic-styled vest and had a handgun in a holster, police said.

The second suspect is described as a five-foot-eight brown male in his 20s wearing all-black clothing, a black mask and a black ballistic-styled vest.
