Londoners should put away the snow shovels and dig out the umbrellas as above-freezing temperatures and rain are on the way.

After a white Christmas, there’s no chance of snow for the final weekend of the year, and temperatures could hit 10 C on Saturday and 9 C on Sunday, Environment Canada says.

“Hopefully that’s something that maybe some people may be looking forward to,” Sean Akiyama, an Environment Canada meteorologist, said Thursday. “Or maybe some who like the cooler temperatures may be disappointed.”

Though there’s no chance of dreaded snow squalls on the last weekend of 2024, there will be periods of rain.

The rain is expected to start Friday, when the high is expected to be 5 C and the low a couple of degrees colder. A high of 10 C and a low of 7 C is forecast for Saturday, with slightly cooler temperatures on Sunday. Showers and periods of rain are expected both days.

After the weekend, temperatures are expected to drop “a little bit,” but not below freezing.

Such a “warm-up” this time of the year isn’t unusual, the federal agency said.

If you’re heading out to celebrate the arrival of the new year, you might see flurries as temperatures drop below freezing again, with a possibility of snow squalls.

In the first week of 2025, temperatures could return to “near normal” winter numbers, with lake-effect snow returning to the region, Environment Canada says.

Early January temperatures are expected to be cooler, with daytime lows in the –2 C to –5 C range.

Last year, the London area set a Boxing Day weather record with the warmest daytime low on record with a low of 4.6 C on Dec. 26 – beating the previous record of 3.3 C set in 1936 – with temperatures soaring to 13.5 C in some parts of the region.
