Review insurance

The recent roof collapse in at the Albion Hotel in Bayfield and the fire in Wortley Village that displaced Sha Choix and A Village Tail, should illustrate to businesses and individuals the need to be sure insurance is in place with loss-of-use and business interruption coverage.

Usually employees will be covered by unemployment insurance.

Diversify markets

How should Canada respond to the 25 per cent tariff threat from U.S. president-elect Donald Trump?

We have some experience working with his chaos and aggressive, America-first policy. Trump likes to blame other countries for the challenges facing the U.S.

We always try to show the U.S. that Canada is its best friend, but this practice may not work with Trump.

We already have a North American trade deal with the U.S. and Mexico. It will help all of us if we continue to work together.

A few of our politicians have proposed to negotiate with the U.S. without Mexico. This is the wrong approach and Trump will consider us a weak country. Mexico has just elected a progressive female president and has trade relations with China and other Latin countries. More than 75 per cent of our trade is with the U.S. and we have not shown any initiative to find other trade partners. We should work more closely with Mexico and other Commonwealth countries in trade. The best way to show our strength to the Trump administration is to find other trade partners and reduce our dependency on the U.S.

Plastics not safe

Regarding the letter Promote recycling (Dec. 12) a rebuttal to Action on plastic (Dec. 4).

The reason the UN treaty talks on plastic collapsed was that although Canada and more than 100 countries worked to ratchet back plastic production, many oil-rich nations pushed back to prevent an agreement.

“Plastics are an integral part of our standard of health” is a red herring.

According to the Geneva Environment Network, the opposite is true. Proven health effects include causing cancer or endocrine disruption such as reproductive, growth, and cognitive impairment.

Underpinning the plastic waste crisis is a campaign of fraud and deception that fossil fuel and other petrochemical companies have created and perpetuated for decades.

Redirect taxes

There have been many letters critical of the Thames Valley District school board’s performance on numerous issues.

People are annoyed.

What surprises me is that more Londoners don’t take the easy next step of reassigning their share of the educational taxes to the London District Catholic school board.

Vote with your money, folks.
