A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to cover the funeral expenses of Jeffrey Mitchell, 60, who police said was killed on Dec. 12, last Thursday, after an altercation at his St. Thomas home.

“Jeff had a larger-than-life personality,” a GoFundMe launched by neighbour Holly MacQuarrie said. “He had a loud, infectious laugh and loved to talk to people, always with a joke and a huge grin. He was kind and loved his children and his grandchildren immensely.”

MacQuarrie declined further comment Sunday, citing the family’s privacy.

The goal for the crowdfunding campaign, launched just days ago to support Mitchell’s surviving children, is $7,500.

Mitchell’s obituary said he worked at Metro and was a “huge fan of the Green Bay Packers and an avid fisherman.” A memorial service for Mitchell will be announced after Christmas, his obituary said.

Mitchell is survived by his son and daughter, four grandchildren, brothers, sister and several nieces and nephews, his obituary said.

The 60-year-old was found dead at his home on Highview Drive in the east end of St. Thomas on Thursday evening.

St. Thomas police said on Friday that a man arrived at London police headquarters the evening before to request a wellness check on his brother following an altercation between the two.

London officers contacted St. Thomas police, who went to a home on Highview Drive and found a man dead.

Michael Mitchell, 59, is charged with second-degree murder, police said. He made a brief appearance in St. Thomas court last week and was held in custody until his next court date by video on Dec. 18.

Police officials have said there is no ongoing threat to public safety. St. Thomas police remained at the scene on Sunday afternoon.

Mitchell’s death is the second homicide in St. Thomas this year.
