Hockey Canada announced on social media Monday that the London Knights star will attend the camp but will “not participate for precautionary reasons” due to an upper-body injury. The 19-year-old from Mt. Brydges is still eligible to play in the tournament beginning Boxing Day and this decision gives him more runway to be healthy enough to compete for the gold medal on home ice.

The Maple Leafs first-rounder was injured in a violent collision with Oshawa defenceman Zackary Sandhu in the second period of the Generals’ 5-3 win over London on Friday at Canada Life Place. The incident happened in the same contest that Cowan registered a point for the 56th consecutive regular-season game to unofficially pass Doug Gilmour’s 55-gamer with the Cornwall Royals in 1982-83

Gilmour’s streak will continue to be recognized by league officials as the OHL record because it happened over the course of one season. Cowan’s regular-season point streak stretches back to November 2023.
