Three men entered an apartment building 241 Simcoe St., west of Wellington Street, on Nov. 19 at 5:35 p.m. and forced their way into a unit, where one of the intruders pointed a gun at a person and fired a shot, police said. Nobody was injured and the suspects ran away before officers arrived.

Police later arrested a fourth suspect, Christian Marengere, 39, who is charged with discharging a firearm with intent to wound or endanger life, breaking and entering with intent and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

Investigators released an image of one of the three outstanding suspects Friday and renewed their appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting, including anyone with surveillance or dash-camera footage, to contact police.

One of two women who live in the second-floor unit where the break-in happened previously told The Free Press that the intruders were only in the apartment for a few minutes and left without taking anything.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, citing concerns for her safety, said she doesn’t know why her unit was targeted and suggested the intruders may have had the wrong apartment.

Other residents on the second floor said the unit where the shooting happened has frequent visitors.

Court records show Marengere, who remains in custody and was scheduled to appear in court Friday, is a resident at the Simcoe Street high-rise operated by London and Middlesex Community Housing (LMCH).

The shooting is the ninth incident of gunfire in London this year and the second at an LMCH property. In the previous case, a man was critically injured in a shooting at a Boullee Street townhouse complex on Sept. 11.

Cody Leblanc Ashe, 28, of London was arrested at a home near Grosvenor and Harley streets – just blocks away from the scene of the shooting – on Oct. 24. He is charged with attempted murder and other gun-related offences.
