Kevin Chan, the hospital’s vice-president of medicine, research and academics and the former acting president and chief executive of LHSC, is stepping down from his role effective Monday.

“Dr. Chan is leaving the organization to be closer to his family. We thank him for the contributions he’s made to Team LHSC since first joining us in March 2023, including serving as acting CEO for six months,” LHSC’s provincially appointed supervisor, David Musyj, said in a statement.

The search to replace Chan is underway, Musyj said. In the meantime, parts of Chan’s portfolio have been distributed to other members of LHSC’s leadership team.

Chan, a pediatrician, first served as LHSC’s corporate medical executive, having previously been the program chief and medical director at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga.

Chan was named LHSC’s acting president and chief executive in November 2023 when then president and chief executive Jackie Schleifer Taylor went on a medical leave.

Schleifer Taylor’s leave of absence came as LHSC faced considerable public backlash over the cost of three international trips by hospital executives, including one to Australia that was cancelled last-minute.

Chan continued as LHSC’s acting president and chief executive until Musyj was appointed to the role by hospital’s board of directors in May.

Chan’s departure is the latest change in LHSC’s top ranks as the hospital undergoes significant organizational adjustments under Musyj, who was appointed as supervisor by Ontario’s Ministry of Health Sept. 25 over LHSC’s “concerning financial performance.”

In October, the hospital announced the resignations of two members of its executive team.

Nash Syed, the vice-president of Children’s Hospital and women’s services at LHSC, is resigning form his post effective Jan. 3, 2025. LHSC had begun recruiting a replacement for Syed.

Dr. Alex Barron, the head of LHSC’s medical advisory committee – a critical group that oversees medical care at LHSC, including the approval of hospital privileges for doctors – left the organization Oct. 11.

In August, LHSC parted ways with Brad Campbell, the hospital’s corporate administration executive since June 2022.

In October, Campbell filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against LHSC, seeking approximately $1.5-million in damages for breach of his employment contract. LHSC has said it intends to defend itself against the lawsuit.

Syed, Barron, Campbell and Chan were appointed to their leadership roles at LHSC under Schleifer Taylor’s leadership.
